El Casino Ballroom, Tucson, AZ 1/27/18

First show of 2018.

I decided to attemp the blog again.  Last year was a total bust, but I’ll try harder.

This year we have a new agency, The Roots Agency, so there may (or may not) be lots to write about.

The Tucson show was amazing: 600+ dancing Tucsonians.  We have always had a great following in Tucson.  And the El Casino is an old friend, in terms of places we’ve played.

The first time we played there, before the roof blew off, was in the late 1980s, with Canray Fontenot and Bois Sec Ardoin.  The really cool thing about the El Casino was that there was a secret bar behind the main stage.  This was our dressing room.  In the secret bar a Norteno band playing.  Also tequila shots were 25 cents.  When we got up to play, Can and Bois were pretty well lit; we found out Michael was pretty much, too.  It was a memorable set: Canray decided to sit in.  Michael slipped, fell, but never missed a beat.  It was quite a show.

The ‘new’ El Casino is working on getting its old grandeur, and I’m sure it will.  Downtown Tucson has lost a lot of its funkiness, but out where the ballroom is looks a lot like it used to.

I hope we can get back to Tucson soon.

Hard day

The Ark gig went well. Good crowd & merch sales. We passed by Elderly Instruments in Lansing on the way to Grand Rapids. Then we hit the road, arriving at the hotel at 3:30. We left for a radio interview/performance at 4:15 at WYCE. After doing 2 songs, we went to the venue, the Ladies Literary Club. Nice place, nice renovation. The last time we played there was April 19, 1997. Packing for the flight to MSP.

The Art Center, Carrboro, NC

Date: August 9, 2009 11:28 AM Topic: The Art Center, Carrboro, NC It was another trip to the Art Center in Carrboro. It's always been a good venue for the group, and this time was no different. Lots of tickets were sold and I think the show was close to a sell out. Instead of playing two sets, which would have increased our merchandise sales, we opted for one long set, one very long set, 2 hours worth. Sometimes I think making decisions like playing a long set isn't always a good idea. It's hard to perform that long, but I do know that it's sets like that which go into the record books. I don't think anyone had a bad time. I do think we wore out the audience, however.

Februrary 17, 2009: Back to Work today

Date: February 17, 2009 8:29 AM Topic: Februrary 17, 2009: Back to Work today Today we're doing a set on Acoustic Cafe, taped at Big Sky studios here in Ann Arbor. Tonight we got the Ark, a place we've been playing at since 1982 or 83. The tour is starting up big time, as we'll be playing more. So 1 down, 13 to go.
